What is the difference between geisha, geiko, and maiko?
In Kyoto, fully trained geisha are often called geiko. Maiko are apprentice artists who perform traditional dance and entertainment as part of Kyoto’s cultural world. Many international visitors use the word “geisha,” so our website uses both “geisha” and “maiko” to make the experience easy to find and understand.
How long is the experience?
The standard experience is approximately 90–120 minutes.
Can we take photos with the maiko?
Yes. Photo opportunities are included. Depending on the venue, garden photography may also be available.
Is this a private experience?
The experience is held in an intimate setting. Private arrangements may be available depending on the plan, venue, date, and group size.
Where does the experience take place?
The venue may be a traditional Kyoto restaurant or a private temple or shrine space, depending on your selected plan and availability. Details will be confirmed after your booking.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. The experience is designed to be enjoyable for international visitors. Clear guidance will be provided so you can understand the performance, games, and etiquette. The maiko speak Japanese, but our staff will provide simultaneous English interpretation.
What should I wear?
Smart casual clothing is recommended. Please avoid overly casual clothing such as beachwear. Since some venues may require removing shoes, comfortable socks are recommended.
Can children join?
Children may join depending on the plan and venue. Please let us know the age of each child when booking, or contact us in advance.
How early should I book?
Early booking is recommended because maiko, geiko, and private venues may have limited availability.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation conditions vary depending on the plan and venue. The detailed policy will be provided before your reservation is confirmed.
